Suzuki Guitar Lessons

I teach guitar to children age 4 and up with the Suzuki method. With the Suzuki method, the parent helps the child practice.  It is called the mother-tongue method because Dr. Suzuki thought that children could learn music in the same way that they learn to talk from their mothers.  Children will learn to play guitar before they learn to read music.  Dr. Suzuki was a violinist who taught children as young as 3 years old to play violin.  Now his method has been adapted for many instruments, including classical guitar.  Students have a weekly half hour lesson and a group class, usually 2x a month for an hour.  (The Pre-Twinkle Group, for preschool and kindergarten children, meets once a month and the more advanced group meets 3x a month.)  It is important that children have the correct size classical guitar.  If you are considering guitar lessons for your child, please meet with me before purchasing a guitar.

Classical Guitar

I teach classical and fingerstyle guitar.  Most of my students have a classical guitar, that is a guitar with nylon strings.  Suzuki students must have a classical guitar.  My students learn to read music and play classical music.  There is a wealth of music written for guitar beginning in the 1800's and up to today, as well as Renaissance and Baroque music transcribed for guitar.  I also teach students to accompany singing while playing chords.

I have both a master's degree and a bachelor's degree in elementary education, with a concentration in music.  I started out playing folk guitar and was introduced to classical guitar in college.  I have continued my study of guitar after college with private lessons, master classes at summer workshops, and Suzuki teacher training.  I have been involved in music ministry at church for over 35 years.  I am part of the flute/guitar duo, Amarylis (www.amarylismusic.com).
